European Women of Achievement Awards 2007 - Press Release 27/04/2007

Inventor Nicki Parsons, who designed an ingenious method of protecting homes from debris damage during building works has been shortlisted for a prestigious award to honour women who have a huge influence on the European stage.

Nicki, whose brainchild is called the Skanky Maggot, has created a folding, reinforced tunnel that fits onto door frames and forms a sealed pathway for workmen carrying materials. Negotiations are currently underway to see the product soon hitting the shops in the UK.

Nicki, who has been helped with her marketing plans by Trevor Baylis, inventor of the wind-up radio, thought of the idea while her own home was being extended: "My brother often used the name Skanky Maggot and it seemed to fit the product so well," she said.

If she wins, Nicki will join an eminent list of those who have collected European Women of Achievement Awards (EWAA), including athlete Paula Radcliffe, yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur, explorer Fiona Thornewill who has walked to both the North and South poles, best selling author Kate Mosse and broadcaster Angela Rippon.

"It's wonderful to be shortlisted for such an award. If I win I will be in tremendous company along with some fantastic role models for influential women," added Nicki.

Jane Holdaway, Chairwoman of the EWAA, which is in its 17th year, said: "Nicki is one of a cast of superb nominees we have had. These awards are designed to encourage women to play a full and active part in all aspects of political, civic and professional life. The aim is to strengthen and deepen the influence of women on European affairs for the benefit of all and Nicki slots quite nicely into that role."

The European Women of Achievement Awards will take place at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London on July 6th where the winners of the five categories - Business, Professional, Humanitarian, Entrepreneur, Arts & Media - will be announced to more than 500 guests from around the world. Nicki is in the Entrepreneur category.

Previous winners have included those working to battle serious health conditions, leaders in the field of welfare work and individuals who have completed phenomenal feats, such as adventurer Rebecca Stephens who has climbed the highest mountains on seven continents.

Note: The Awards are made by the European Union of Women, an independent organisation which has consultative status with the Council of Europe and is represented among the Non-Government Organisations (NGO's) at the Council and the United Nations.
